At Carolinas BioHealth Dentistry, we help patients of all ages achieve straighter, healthier smiles with options that fit their lifestyle. Two of the most common orthodontic treatments—Invisalign vs. traditional braces—can both produce great results. But they differ in many important ways, and understanding those differences can help you make a more confident choice. Whether you want a discreet solution or need complex correction, there is a path that’s right for you.
Let’s explore five major ways Invisalign and braces are different and how each can impact your orthodontic experience:
The most obvious difference is visibility. Braces use metal brackets and wires, which are noticeable when you smile. Invisalign, on the other hand, uses a series of clear, removable aligners that are nearly invisible. Many teens and adults prefer Invisalign because it blends in with their teeth and doesn’t affect their appearance in social or professional settings. It’s an especially popular option among adults who want orthodontic results without revisiting a “metal mouth” look from their school days.
Traditional braces are fixed in place and can only be removed by a dentist or orthodontist. Invisalign aligners can be removed by the patient at any time, especially during meals or while brushing and flossing. This means you can eat what you like without food restrictions and maintain your oral hygiene routine without navigating around wires or brackets. However, it’s important to be disciplined; aligners must be worn at least 20 – 22 hours per day for the best results.
Metal wires and brackets from braces can cause irritation and discomfort by rubbing against the cheeks and lips. Tightening adjustments can also cause soreness. Invisalign aligners are crafted from smooth plastic and custom-fitted to your teeth, reducing irritation. While both systems apply pressure to shift your teeth, Invisalign’s pressure tends to be gentler and more gradual. Most patients find the adjustment period for Invisalign to be shorter and more manageable.
Braces often require more frequent in-office visits for adjustments. Invisalign typically involves fewer appointments, and many patients are given several sets of aligners to change at home every 1-2 weeks. While the total treatment time can vary depending on the case, mild to moderate issues can often be corrected faster with Invisalign. Our team uses advanced digital scans to plan your progress with precision, reducing the need for manual corrections.
Braces are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues, including complex bite misalignments and significant tooth movement. Invisalign has advanced over the years and can now handle many of the same issues, but in some severe cases, braces may still be the better option. During your consultation, we will evaluate your needs and recommend the most appropriate solution. The goal is not only aesthetics, but a well-functioning bite and stable oral health.

Hi, my name is Billy Boswell, or DJ, and my experience was easy; it was super simple.
Dr. Tyler Wynne made it super comfortable; he’s super professional, and as you can see, the result was amazing.
I’m sure they’ll have something that looks like my old teeth, and the day of I got compliments about how I was already smiling bigger. People were just noticing that, like, I was laughing more with a full smile. Yeah, it was super simple, and he made it super easy. No pain; anytime there was any kind of discomfort, he was always there to reassure you and be like, “Hey, if we need to do this, we can do this, we can do that,” and he walks you through every step of the way.
He’s also super communicative; he knows that everybody’s situation is different and can work with you, too.
I came in, I was referred to Dr. Wynne and his office by my integrative doctor. I’m a cancer patient in remission, and I was advised to have my mercury fillings removed. I had quite a few mercury fillings.
So I am just amazed at how much better I feel since they’ve been removed.
I wasn’t expecting that, but just coming here, I felt so comfortable. I was made comfortable every time I came in for a visit, and I came in for several visits because again, I had quite a few to be removed, and I also had my front teeth redesigned, so I had those capped. Everything just went beautifully. I couldn’t be more pleased with the attention, the kindness, and the caring that I have received here. The people here are wonderful. They’re very professional. My product, my result, is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t have asked for better. I’m very grateful to be a patient here and continue to be a patient here.
So what were you looking for when you came to see us? I was looking for a change. I wanted something different in to get, you know, closing the spaces. Yes, perfect, and compared to what you expected, how was your experience and the results of the treatment here? It was really good. Dr. Wynne and Brittany did a great job and helped ease my nervousness and anxiety, and it turned out to be really great. Thank you. What would you say to someone who had dental problems who was looking for dental care and for treatment? I would direct them here for you guys to help treat them. Oh, thank you. So glad you had a good experience and a beautiful outcome. And thank you. You’re welcome.
Thank You. So John, thank you for coming in for your maintenance visit today. Can you tell us a little bit about your experience here in our office for all the recent dental work we’ve done for you?
Oh, absolutely, from entry the receptionist, all of the dental technicians, Dr. Wynne- absolutely phenomenal. I won’t call it bedside manner, but chairside manner, the dental work that was done. I have received nothing but accolades, and hopefully, in return, occasionally you picked up a patient, but in the Aftercare – magnificent, so I would recommend highly this office and practice. fantastic. So I would have seen all of your expectations were met. Oh, beyond expectations and and I have 73 years of dental experience as a patient. So the highest accolades, if I said that, right? Fantastic. You know, that’s right.
We really appreciate it, John. Thank you for doing this for us.

Could you tell us about your most recent experience with your dental treatment you’ve had?

You’re welcome. We were just interested in seeing how your experience was with the safe mercury removal.
You know, it was great, Dawn. I, you know, the care that Dr. Wynne and Megan, you know, gave was just top-notch. I was not familiar with this process before, you know, when I made the appointment. Well when I made the appointment I was my my doctor in Chicago told me about you know, this Association, so I looked it up and everything that I read Dr. Wynne carried out here, you know, great bedside manner he and his staff really care about you as a person not just a dental patient, you know, it started with coming in sitting in the consult room and understanding a bit about me and what my needs were and what my long-term expectations were and all of those have been met. fantastic.
So you would say that everything that you expected from us was met. Absolutely, absolutely – follow-up appointments anytime. I called and said, “Something doesn’t feel right. Can I come in?” You all accommodated me and and everything is perfect.
